Cave houses under a rock overhang on the green valley side of Setenil de las Bodegas

How to get to Setenil de las Bodegas

Most people reach Setenil de las Bodegas by car or on a day tour. Ronda to Setenil is 19 km, about 30 minutes' drive or 45 minutes on the line 66 bus, which runs Monday to Saturday only. Málaga and Seville are just under two hours away by car. Park on the edge: the covered Los Caños car park charges.

Setenil de las Bodegas sits on the northern edge of Cádiz province, in the Sierra de Cádiz, 19 km from Ronda. You can drive, take the bus from Ronda on any day except Sunday, or join a day tour that pairs it with Ronda; trains are suspended for line works. For anyone without a car, the tour is the simplest way in.

From Road distance Drive time
Ronda 19 km about 30 min
Olvera 15 km about 25 min
Málaga city 97 km about 1 h 45 min
Málaga airport 91 km about 1 h 50 min
Seville 115 km about 1 h 50 min
Jerez de la Frontera 104 km about 1 h 40 min
Cádiz 134 km about 2 h

We calculated these with OpenStreetMap routing from the centre of the village, so treat them as estimates rather than official figures.

Day tours: the easy way without a car

Plenty of coach and minibus tours stop in Setenil, nearly always paired with Ronda. They leave from Málaga, Seville, Marbella and Estepona, and one half-day trip leaves from Ronda bus station. Time in Setenil varies a lot: from 45 minutes on a long day that also takes in Córdoba, to 75 minutes on the standard coach trips, to almost two hours on a small-group tour with a guided walk, and over two hours on the half-day trip from Ronda.

Some Málaga tours include a ride on a little train in Setenil, according to their listings. Our top pick from Málaga is the most-booked of them: about four hours in Ronda, then an hour in Setenil with the train ride included. Reviews of the one-hour stops say they can feel rushed, so if Setenil is the reason you are going, pick a tour that gives it more time. The tours we recommend are listed just below this guide, and the full selection is on our tours page.

Driving to Setenil

The town hall publishes these routes on its website.

Ronda to Setenil, and from the Costa del Sol. From the coast, take the A-397 to Ronda. From Ronda, take the A-367 towards Campillos and turn off for Arriate on the MA-7400, then follow the MA-7403 and the CA-9122. The town hall puts it at about 17 km from the junction. Andalusia’s tourism board calls Setenil “just twenty minutes” from Ronda; routing software says closer to 30.

Málaga to Setenil. Take the A-357 towards Campillos, then the A-367 towards Cuevas del Becerro and Ronda, then the A-7276 towards Alcalá del Valle and the CA-9121 into Setenil. If you would rather see Ronda on the way, our Málaga to Ronda guide covers that leg.

Seville to Setenil. Take the A-376 past Utrera, the A-375 towards Puerto Serrano and the A-384 towards Olvera. The last 17 km run on the CA-9106 and CA-9120 through Torre Alháquime. The Seville to Ronda guide has the options if you want to add Ronda.

From Cádiz and Jerez. Take the A-384 towards Arcos, then on towards Olvera, finishing on the same CA-9106 and CA-9120 route through Torre Alháquime. Arcos de la Frontera and Olvera both make good stops on the way.

Parking in Setenil de las Bodegas

Don’t drive into the old town. Its streets are too narrow for parking and cars get scraped, so there are no visitor spaces in the centre. Leave the car on the edge and walk in.

Only one car park is known to charge: Los Caños, the covered one. The tourist office lists three more signed car parks and publishes no fee for any of the four. No official source calls any of them free.

Car park Fee (checked October 2026) Walk to Calle Cuevas del Sol Walk to the tourist office
Los Caños (official, covered) Paid; no official tariff, check on site about 10 min about 4 min
Colegio Virgen del Carmen (official) No published fee not mapped not mapped
Parque de la Granja (official) No published fee about 7 min about 12 min
Recinto Ferial, the fairground (official) No published fee not mapped not mapped
By the bus stop (not on the official list) Marked free on OpenStreetMap about 2 to 3 min about 9 min
Football pitch lot, daytime only (not on the official list) Free, according to visitor reports about 9 min about 14 min

The walking times are our own estimates from OpenStreetMap routing. They assume flat ground and Setenil is steep, so round up. The Los Caños times assume it is the underground car park at the foot of Calle Calcetas, which fits its address but which we could not confirm. The Parque de la Granja times run from the middle of Calle Vicente Aleixandre.

Aparcamiento Los Caños

The tourist office map calls it the “Aparcamiento cubierto de Los Caños” and gives an address on Calle Callejón. It sits at the bottom of town on the road out towards Olvera, so it is easy to miss if you arrive from Ronda, according to the travel site Spain on Foot.

It charges, and Spain on Foot (updated August 2026) says it is open 24 hours. The town hall publishes no tariff, so read the sign at the entrance. In February 2026 the town hall opened Los Caños free of charge to residents during a storm, as an exceptional measure, which tells you it normally charges. Visitor reviews say the ramp down is steep and that you pay again each time you leave.

Colegio Virgen del Carmen car park

By the primary school on Urbanización Almendral. The tourist office gives no fee, and Spain on Foot mentions a paid space by the school with informal, changeable pricing. We could not find its exact position, so follow the signs and check them on school days.

Parque de la Granja car park

On Calle Vicente Aleixandre, about 7 minutes’ walk from Cuevas del Sol by our estimate. The tourist office lists it with no fee, hours or capacity, and we found no other details.

Recinto Ferial (fairground) car park

The fairground car park is on the tourist office’s list, again with no fee. We could not pin down its exact location. We would not count on it during the August fair.

Free parking near the cave streets

Two spots are free according to sources other than the town:

  • By the bus stop near Cuevas del Sol: a surface car park beside the bus stop, marked free on OpenStreetMap, about 2 to 3 minutes from Cuevas del Sol. It is not on the official list.
  • By the football pitch: about 10 spaces, free in the daytime according to park4night users, with a sign banning parking from 20:00 to 08:00 (one reviewer). About 9 minutes’ walk from Cuevas del Sol.

Spain on Foot names a few more: street parking on Calle San Sebastián at the top of town (sat navs may not know the street, so search for “Mirador Balcón De Setenil de las Bodegas”), about 20 spaces on Paseo Federico García Lorca, where it warns a car can be towed on weekdays between 08:00 and 17:00, and an open lot on Calle Camilo José Cela about 12 minutes from the caves. It also lists Calle Jabonería and an unpaved lot on Calle Cantarería Alta, the Parking de Tierra, without having checked them itself.

Our Setenil map pins five parking spots from this guide, plus the bus stop.

When the car parks fill

Tour coaches arrive between about 11:00 and 14:00, so Spain on Foot advises parking before 11:00 or after 14:00. In summer and at weekends the rock streets are quietest before 10:00 or after 18:00. Visitors on park4night have found the higher car parks full in September 2026 and every space taken in January 2025, so busy days are not only in spring.

Traffic rules and fines

The town’s traffic ordinance, approved in 2010 and still posted on the town hall’s website, sets a 10 km/h limit in pedestrian areas and on single-lane or crowded streets. Its fines run up to €100 for a minor offence, €200 for a serious one and €500 for a very serious one, halved if you pay promptly.

  • Residents’ bays: in July 2026 the town hall said it was marking new parking spaces for residents of the historic centre. Don’t take them.
  • Pedestrian streets: two 2026 blogs say the cave streets are pedestrianised. We found no official order, but you cannot park on Calle Cuevas del Sol, so don’t try to drive down there.
  • Height: a motorhome driver reported a 2.05 m height barrier on one signed route out of the centre in January 2025.
  • Unofficial attendants: park4night users report a man asking €5 to park all day on a lot near the entrance roundabout that is listed as free. It is not an official charge.

Motorhomes

We found no official motorhome area in Setenil. The traffic ordinance bans living or camping in a motorhome parked on the street. By day, park4night users use a flat roadside spot on the Ronda road at km 1, with about 5 spaces, roughly 11 minutes’ walk from Cuevas del Sol, and the football pitch lot (one reviewer fitted a 7.40 m vehicle there). For a night, Camping El Nogalejo, about 1.2 km from the centre, advertises motorhome stays.

If you would rather sleep in Setenil and leave the car alone for a night, our guide to hotels in Setenil says which places have a car park at the door. The old-town cave houses don’t.

Some tour listings include a ride on a little train in Setenil. We found no official source for a public tourist train service, so don’t count on one to get you from the car park into town.

By bus: Ronda to Setenil and Setenil to Ronda

Autocares Sierra de las Nieves, part of Grupo Paco Pepe, runs line 66 between Ronda and Setenil through Arriate. The trip takes 45 minutes and costs €2.32 one way, the fare in force from 1 May 2026. Times checked October 2026:

Monday to Friday Saturday Sunday and public holidays
Ronda to Setenil 08:45, 11:30, 13:10, 16:30, 18:00 08:45, 13:10, 16:30 No buses
Setenil to Ronda 07:15, 09:30, 12:15, 13:55, 18:45 07:15, 09:30, 13:55 No buses

On a weekday, the 08:45 from Ronda and the 13:55 or 18:45 back give you a half day or a full day. On a Saturday the last bus back leaves at 13:55. Road works in Arriate have closed one stop there, and the operator asks passengers to check times and stops before travelling.

Where the bus stops in Setenil is not clear-cut. The fare table names two stops, “Setenil” and “Setenil Alto”, one stop is mapped beside the car park near Cuevas del Sol, and the operator describes another next to the health centre. Ask the driver where to catch the return bus.

Málaga to Setenil by bus

One direct bus runs on working days, Monday to Saturday: it leaves Málaga bus station at 14:00, reaches Ronda at 16:30 and Setenil at 17:15. The return leaves Setenil at 07:15 and reaches Málaga at 10:55. The fare is €13.88 one way (from 1 May 2026, checked October 2026). Those times rule out a day trip by bus, but they work if you stay the night.

The other way is a Damas bus from Málaga to Ronda, then line 66. On weekdays, get to Ronda before 18:00 for the last bus to Setenil. We found no direct bus from Málaga airport, so go to the bus station first. The Málaga to Ronda guide covers the Damas leg.

Seville to Setenil by bus

There is no direct bus. Damas runs Seville to Ronda from Plaza de Armas at 08:45, 10:00, 15:30 and 18:30 on weekdays, and at 08:45, 10:00 and 15:30 at weekends (checked October 2026), then you change to line 66. On a weekday, the 08:45 or 10:00 from Seville should connect with the 13:10 or 16:30 from Ronda. Damas publishes no journey times, so leave some slack. With no line 66 on Sundays, there is no Sunday connection.

Cádiz, Jerez and Olvera to Setenil by bus

Transportes Generales Comes runs one bus on weekdays only: Cádiz 12:45, Jerez 13:45 and Olvera 15:55, arriving in Setenil at 16:10. Fares in Comes’ timetable search, for dates from 16 November 2026, are €21.31 from Cádiz, €15.29 from Jerez and €1.57 from Olvera. The return leaves Setenil at 06:30. The same search showed no Setenil stop for dates between 15 October and 15 November 2026, so check Comes’ timetable before you rely on it.

Damas, which runs the buses from Málaga and Seville to Ronda, has no Setenil stop in its winter 2026-27 timetable. The town hall’s website still lists Los Amarillos, but we found no current Los Amarillos service to Setenil.

By train: currently replaced by buses

No trains run to Setenil for now. Renfe has replaced its services on the Algeciras, Ronda and Antequera line with buses while Adif, which manages the track, carries out major works. Adif suspended rail traffic between Algeciras and Venta de Cárdenas from September 2026, and the press reports the closure is expected to last into autumn 2027.

Renfe’s replacement buses include an all-stations service that lists Setenil. We could not confirm whether that bus stops at Setenil station or in the village itself, so check with Renfe before relying on it. Check renfe.com for the current arrangements and timetables.

When trains return, plan for the distance. Setenil station, which opened in 1891 and also serves Alcalá del Valle, is beside the A-7276 road, about 5.3 km from the village in a straight line and about 7.9 km by road. On foot that is roughly an hour and a half, and we found no bus between the station and the town. Book a taxi before you travel; the tourist office lists local taxi numbers on its contact page.

Getting around once you are there

You walk. The old town is compact but steep, with stepped lanes and cobbles between the rock streets in the gorge and the castle keep on the crag above. Our walking route through Setenil puts the sights in order.

Combining Setenil with the region

Setenil sits on the Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos, the White Villages route. Olvera is 15 km away, and Zahara de la Sierra and Grazalema are each about 50 minutes’ drive. The white villages guide helps plan a loop, and the day trips from Málaga and day trips from Seville guides cover the tour options from each city.

Questions people ask

Where can you park in Setenil de las Bodegas?

The tourist office lists four car parks: the covered Los Caños car park, the Colegio Virgen del Carmen car park on Urbanización Almendral, Parque de la Granja on Calle Vicente Aleixandre and the fairground (Recinto Ferial). Los Caños charges; the other three have no published fee. The old town has no parking of its own and its streets are very narrow, so park on the edge and walk in.

Is parking free in Setenil de las Bodegas?

Not everywhere. Los Caños, the covered car park, charges, but the town hall publishes no tariff, so check the price at the entrance. No official source calls any Setenil car park free. OpenStreetMap marks the car park by the bus stop as free, and visitors report a free day-only lot by the football pitch.

How do I get to Setenil de las Bodegas from Málaga?

By car, take the A-357 towards Campillos, then the A-367 towards Cuevas del Becerro and Ronda, then the A-7276 and the CA-9121 into Setenil: about 97 km and 1 hour 45 minutes. One direct bus a day, Monday to Saturday, leaves Málaga bus station at 14:00 and reaches Setenil at 17:15 (€13.88, checked October 2026). Without a car, a Ronda and Setenil day tour from Málaga is simpler.

Can you get to Setenil de las Bodegas by train?

Not at the moment. Renfe has replaced trains on the Algeciras, Ronda and Antequera line with buses while Adif rebuilds the track, work expected to last into autumn 2027. We could not confirm whether the replacement bus stops at Setenil station or in the village. When trains return, note the station is about 7.9 km by road from town. Check renfe.com first.

How do you get from Ronda to Setenil de las Bodegas?

Driving takes about 30 minutes for the 19 km: take the A-367 towards Campillos, turn off for Arriate on the MA-7400, then follow the MA-7403 and CA-9122. The line 66 bus runs five times a day on weekdays and three times on Saturdays, takes 45 minutes and costs €2.32 (checked October 2026). There are no buses on Sundays or public holidays.

How do I get to Setenil de las Bodegas from Seville?

By car, take the A-376 past Utrera, the A-375 towards Puerto Serrano and the A-384 towards Olvera, then the CA-9106 and CA-9120 through Torre Alháquime. It is about 115 km, or 1 hour 50 minutes. There is no direct bus: take a Damas bus to Ronda, then line 66 to Setenil, Monday to Saturday only. A day tour that pairs Setenil with Ronda is simpler.
