Marbella to Ronda is about 60 km, a little over an hour by car up the A-397 mountain road from San Pedro de Alcántara. Avanza runs four direct buses a day that take about 1 hour 30 minutes. Marbella has no railway station. A coach tour from Marbella adds Setenil de las Bodegas.
Marbella to Ronda is about 60 km. By car it takes a little over an hour: west along the coast to San Pedro de Alcántara, then 50 km up the A-397, a mountain road of continuous bends. Avanza runs four direct buses a day, which take about an hour and a half. There is no train, because Marbella has no station.
If you have the whole day, add Setenil de las Bodegas, the village built under rock overhangs 19 km beyond Ronda.

Take the AP-7 or the A-7 west from Marbella to San Pedro de Alcántara and follow the signs for Ronda. From San Pedro the A-397 climbs for about 50 km, bend after bend, and takes about an hour on its own. Route planners give Marbella centre to Ronda centre as 55 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes.
Allow the longer figure, because the bends keep your speed down most of the way. If anyone in the car gets carsick, sit them in the front.
The A-397 has had a rough couple of years:
We could not confirm whether the single-lane section from 2025 is back to two lanes. Check the road before you leave, especially after heavy rain.
Parking in Ronda. Leave the car in a public car park rather than driving into the old town. Our Ronda parking guide lists the options.
From Ronda, take the A-367 towards Campillos, turn off for Arriate on the MA-7400, then follow the MA-7403 and CA-9122 to Setenil. It is 19 km, about 30 minutes. Marbella to Setenil directly is about 78 km, roughly 1 hour 35 minutes.
Going to Setenil first means you reach the cave streets while they are cool and before the coaches. Our guide to getting to Setenil has the car parks, and things to do in Setenil covers what to see in a few hours.
Avanza runs the only direct bus. Its long-distance timetable, valid every day from 14 September 2026 and checked in October 2026, gives four departures each way:
| Marbella to Ronda | Arrives | Ronda to Marbella | Arrives |
|---|---|---|---|
| 09:45 | 11:15 | 12:15 | 13:45 |
| 11:05 | 12:30 | 15:00 | 16:30 |
| 16:25 | 17:55 | 16:15 | 17:45 |
| 21:50 | 23:15 | 18:35 | 20:05 |
Every bus also stops in San Pedro de Alcántara, 15 to 20 minutes from Marbella. The 09:45 and the 11:05 start in Málaga, and the last three buses from Ronda continue to Málaga.
For a day trip, catch the 09:45 and come back on the 16:15 or the 18:35. That gives you five to seven hours in Ronda, enough for the bridge, the old town and lunch, but not for Setenil. Local buses from Ronda to Setenil take about 40 to 45 minutes and run only a few times a day. Check Avanza’s website before you go, because the timetable changes with the season.
No. Marbella has no railway station: the nearest mainline station is in Málaga, and the coastal Cercanías line ends at Fuengirola. A line on to Marbella and Estepona has been proposed but not built.
Ronda has a station, but in October 2026 no trains use it. Renfe runs the line by road while Adif rebuilds it, with work expected to last until about autumn 2027. From Marbella the bus is simpler in any case.
Without a car, a tour is the easiest way to see Ronda and Setenil in one day from Marbella. Our top pick is the shared coach from Marbella and Estepona: it gives you a guided walk and free time in Ronda, then an hour and a half in Setenil. That is longer than most Setenil stops, which often last an hour.
Two other trips from Marbella skip Setenil but suit different travellers. A private driver-guide does a half day in Ronda with the bullring and tapas. A small-group wine tour adds two Serranía de Ronda wineries to free time in town; our Ronda wineries guide lists the bodegas you can visit on your own. All three are listed at the foot of this page.
Ronda is close enough for a day, but the town is at its best in the evening after the coaches leave. Our where to stay in Ronda guide covers where to base yourself, and things to do in Ronda has a one-day plan with the Puente Nuevo and El Tajo gorge at its centre.
For other trips from the coast, see our day trips from Málaga, which covers Marbella too. Flying into Málaga? Málaga to Ronda has the inland route and the Damas bus.

About an hour and ten minutes by car for roughly 60 km: the AP-7 or A-7 to San Pedro de Alcántara, then the A-397 over the mountains. The direct Avanza bus takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. A coach tour that also stops in Setenil de las Bodegas lasts about 11 hours door to door.
Avanza's timetable from 14 September 2026, checked in October 2026, has four direct buses every day from Marbella: 09:45, 11:05, 16:25 and 21:50. Buses back from Ronda leave at 12:15, 15:00, 16:15 and 18:35. For a day trip, take the 09:45 and return on the 16:15 or 18:35.
It is slow rather than hard: about 50 km of continuous hairpin bends, so take your time. It has had closures: a landslide in March 2025, single-lane running from that July, and a forest fire near Igualeja that shut it until 06:00 on 28 September 2026. Check the road status before you set off.
No. Marbella has no railway station, and in October 2026 no trains run into Ronda either, because the line through Ronda is closed for engineering work until about autumn 2027. The direct Avanza bus is the public transport option, and it is quicker than any rail route would be from the coast.
Yes. By car, Setenil is about 78 km from Marbella, roughly 1 hour 35 minutes, and 19 km from Ronda, so you can see both in one day. Without a car, the shared coach from Marbella and Estepona gives you a guided walk in Ronda and an hour and a half in Setenil. The bus alone cannot fit Setenil in.
