The easiest Ronda day trip from Málaga is a coach tour, and the most popular ones also stop in Setenil de las Bodegas. Driving takes about 1 hour 40 minutes. Damas buses from Málaga bus station take roughly two hours. No trains run to Ronda in October 2026: Renfe has replaced the line with buses.
Ronda is about 100 km northwest of Málaga, high in the Serranía de Ronda. You have three realistic ways to do it in a day: a coach tour, the Damas bus or a hire car. The train, which many older guides recommend, is not running in 2026.
Whichever you pick, think about adding Setenil de las Bodegas, the white village built under rock overhangs 19 km from Ronda. Most tours already include it.

Day tours from Málaga to Ronda and Setenil
For most people this is the simplest choice. You are picked up in Málaga or along the Costa del Sol, you get three to four hours in Ronda, and you stop in Setenil on the way there or back. The tours at the bottom of this page are the ones we would book, and they differ in useful ways:
- The most-reviewed trip, our top pick, gives you about four hours in Ronda, then an hour in Setenil with a ride on its little tourist train, plus an optional wine and cured-meat tasting in Ronda.
- The cheapest coach goes to Setenil first, with 75 minutes of free time before the midday crowds, then four free hours in Ronda. A guided walk in Ronda is an extra.
- The guided version puts a guide with you in both towns: a two-and-a-half-hour walk in Ronda, then a guided hour in Setenil.
- The shuttle-train tour includes Setenil’s tourist train, so you reach the cave streets without the walk uphill, and gives up to four hours in Ronda.
- The semi-private tour takes seven people at most and spends almost two hours walking Setenil with a guide before the afternoon in Ronda.
- The Costa del Sol pickup collects you from several resorts and adds local sweets and wine in Ronda.
Reviews of the shorter Setenil stops say an hour can feel rushed. If Setenil is the part you most want to see, pick the semi-private tour or drive. Our tours page has the full list, including trips from Marbella and Estepona.
Malaga to Ronda by car
Driving gives you the most time and makes Setenil easy to add.
The inland route is the one to use. Take the A-357 from Málaga towards Campillos, then the A-367 to Ronda. It is roughly 100 km and takes about 1 hour 40 minutes on main roads.
The coast route follows the A-7 or AP-7 west to San Pedro de Alcántara, near Marbella, then climbs the A-397 for about 50 km of continuous hairpins to Ronda. It takes longer from Málaga and the A-397 has had closures: a landslide in March 2025, single-lane running from that July, and a forest fire that shut it until 28 September 2026. Check the road before you set off. Our Marbella to Ronda guide covers this road in detail.
Parking. Don’t try to drive into the old town. Our Ronda parking guide lists the public car parks, starting with Martínez Astein on the north side of the new town. The Plaza del Socorro car park has been closed since August 2026.
Malaga to Ronda by bus
Damas runs the direct Málaga to Ronda bus from Málaga bus station on Paseo de los Tilos to Ronda bus station on Plaza Concepción García Redondo. Its winter 2026-27 timetable (valid 1 September 2026 to 30 June 2027, checked October 2026) gives:

Journey times quoted by booking sites range from about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes. For a day trip, take the 09:00 (08:30 at weekends) and come back on the 18:30 (18:00 or 20:00 at weekends). Check the timetable on damas-sa.es before you travel, since it changes with the season. Damas does not publish fares on its timetable, so we don’t quote one.
A second, slower bus exists. Autocares Sierra de las Nieves leaves Málaga bus station at 14:00 on Monday to Saturday working days and goes the long way, through El Burgo, reaching Ronda at 16:30. Its fare to Ronda is €12.01 (from 1 May 2026, checked October 2026). The same bus carries on to Setenil, arriving at 17:15.
Is there a train from Málaga to Ronda?
No. No Málaga to Ronda train runs in October 2026. Since March 2026 Renfe has run the whole Algeciras to Antequera line, including Ronda, by road, because of storm damage and engineering work. In July 2026 the regional press reported that Adif, which runs the track, would suspend trains between Algeciras and Venta de Cárdenas from early September 2026 until around autumn 2027.
Ronda passengers now take a train from Málaga María Zambrano to Antequera-Santa Ana, which booking sites put at about 30 minutes, and then a Renfe bus to Ronda station. That is slower and more complicated than the direct Damas bus.

Adding Setenil de las Bodegas
Setenil is the obvious add-on. It is a village of cave houses built into the gorge of the Río Trejo, with whole streets roofed by rock. Calle Cuevas del Sol and Cuevas de la Sombra are lined with tapas bars. You need about half a day to see it properly; see things to do in Setenil.
By car it is easy. Ronda to Setenil is 19 km, about 30 minutes, via the A-367 towards Campillos, the MA-7400 to Arriate, then the MA-7403 and CA-9122. You can also go straight from Málaga to Setenil (about 97 km, 1 hour 45 minutes), see it in the morning before the coaches arrive, then drive on to Ronda for the afternoon. Park at one of the signed car parks on the edge of Setenil and walk in. Our guide to getting to Setenil has the routes and car parks.
By bus it is harder in a single day. Autocares Sierra de las Nieves line 66 runs from Ronda to Setenil in 45 minutes for €2.32: five buses on weekdays, three on Saturdays and none on Sundays or public holidays (checked October 2026). The 14:00 Sierra de las Nieves bus from Málaga also goes straight through to Setenil. If you stay a night in Ronda or in Setenil itself, a half-day coach trip from Ronda bus station visits Setenil with a ride on its tourist train and returns at about 1:30 pm.
By tour it is already done for you: most Málaga tours stop in both.
A one-day driving plan
- Leave Málaga by 8:00 and drive to Setenil (about 1 hour 45 minutes).
- Walk the cave streets and the castle area until late morning.
- Drive 30 minutes to Ronda, park at Martínez Astein (car parks here) and have lunch.
- Spend the afternoon on the Puente Nuevo and the gorge, then the bullring and the old town. Our Ronda guide has a full list.
- Drive back on the A-367 and A-357 before dark.
